Building the Infrastructure of Resource Sharing: Union Catalogs, Distributed Search, and Cross-Database Linkage

چکیده

EFFECTIVE R SOURCE SHARING PRESUPPOSES an infrastructure which permits users to locate materials of interest in both print and electonic formats. TWO approaches for providing this are union catalogs and Z39.50-based distributed search systems. The advantages and limitations of each approach are considered, paying particular attention to a realistic assessment of 239.50 implementations. This article argues that the two approaches should be considered complementary rather than competitive. Technologies to create linkage between the bibliographic apparatus of catalogs and abstracting and indexing databases and primary content in electronic form, such as the new Serial Item and Contribution Identifier (SICI) standard are also discussed as key elements in the infrastructure to support resource sharing.

Metadata Management Model for Relational Database Publication on Grid : an Ontology Based Framework

The Grids is emerging as a building infrastructure that support coordinated management and sharing of inter-connected hardware and software resources in distributed environment. Plenty of structured data existing on the grid need to be managed by database such as relational databases. Metadata plays a critical role in grid database integration, so metadata model is put forward which comprises i...

Distributed Information Search and Retrieval for Astronomical Resource Discovery and Data Mining

Information search and retrieval has become by nature a distributed task. We look at tools and techniques which are of importance in this area. Current technological evolution can be summarized as the growing stability and cohesiveness of distributed architectures of searchable objects. The objects themselves are more often than not multimedia, including published articles or grey literature re...

DObjects: A Metacomputing Framework with Dynamic Query Processing for Distributed Data Networks

Many contemporary applications rely heavily on large scale distributed and heterogeneous data sources; examples are enterprise end-system management, workflow management, and computer-supported collaborative work. The key constraints for building a distributed data query infrastructure for such applications are: 1) scalability: the system needs to scale both for number of data sources and numbe...
